Baby's cough

What does that wheezing, hacking, or barking mean?

Baby's cough, as any others person, can mean various things and the bad news is that you cannot ask your little one what is actually wrong. Sometimes it is truly hard to know if you should call your doctor for advice, make an appointment or perhaps even go straight to the hospital. So just to help you understand what to do when your little one is coughing, here are some types of it and little advices how to recognize it.

          Dry one

This occurs when a baby has a cold or some allergies. It would help to clear if you would use postnasal drip or irritation from a sore throat.

          Wet cough

This results from a respiratory illness accompanying a bacterial infection. This causes phlegm or mucus to form in baby's airways. Children who are younger than 4 months do not cough much, that is why if they do, it is probably quite serious. In the winter, if an infant is coughing awfully, it might be a dangerous viral infection for infants. Once your little one is more than 1 year old, coughs become less alarming. In most cases, it is likely your child's cough is nothing more than a simple cold.

Just a simple cold or a serious flu?

If your little one has a cold, he probably also has a stuffy or runny nose and of course sore throat. You also might understand it from the sound. It sounds a little like dry hack. Baby also might have a slight fever at night. To help him, you could try to give baby something stronger to quiet the cough, but using medicine for children under 6 years old is not recommended. That is why it is better to stick to natural methods such as honey, saline drops and a cool-mist humidifier.

          Croup

You know baby has croup if he wakes up in the middle of the night with a barking cough, the sound of it is very unique, so you should not mistake it for any other, and also, baby will find it quite difficult to breath. Croup usually affects children who are under age 5 and often begins with a common cold or sniffle earlier in the day. Other symptom you might notice is the seal-like cough when your child inhales, it is caused by the difficult breathing. To help your little one you should firstly try to calm your him, after you will do it, you might want to run the shower, close the bathroom door and just let your little one breathe in the steamy air. Other option is to take him outside, fresh air always helps to make breathing easier. By the way, you should also know that croup usually clears up in three or four days. As always, if it does not, be sure to call your doctor.

It is clear parent will get into a panic, at least a small one, but you must stay calm and look at everything simply. After all, you have a mobile phone and your doctor’s number, right? Hopefully these few types will help you to make sure your child is healthy and happy.
