Tips to toddler's language development

Teaching baby to talk and being a part of his learning journey is an exciting experience. Your little one’s first sounds and facial expressions will morph into gestures and eventually into words. It will be so strange how fast he will learn to communicate with you and others around him. But if you are interested in helping him out, perhaps you should read these simple advices you will surely find helpful.

          Reading in company

Just by sharing a picture book with your tot will make it much easier for him to build vocabulary and understanding. Reading the story in fun voices will make it much more enjoyable experience to him, which will give baby more opportunities to learn the language. By the way, you can also point at pictures on the page and encourage a conversation by making simple comments or starting a sentence to allow your child to finish it. You do not need to worry about reading every single word. However, having conversations about the pictures in the pages will surely help your little one make connections between the book and real life

Get to your little one’s level

You know you need to put away those screens at least for an hour and get down on your little one’s level to play with him a little. Let your child to be the leader and do not be afraid to get quite silly and become a child for some time yourself. Also, do not forget to pause to see how baby wants to play. It honestly does not matter if the game becomes totally unrealistic. It your little one’s imagination world, that is why you should allow him do whatever he wants, of course, with some boundaries. Do not let him play with dangerous kitchen gadgets, just because he likes how they are shiny, but if your child’s cow wants to become a tractor’s driver or a hairstylist, let her.

Talk about everything in your daily life

When you are out with your child, make sure to make some conversations with him, talk to him about what you are both seeing or doing. At the grocery store you may talk about what you are putting in the cart. About fruits and vegetables and their shapes. You might also talk your way through chores at home, too. Compare your stuff with your child’s. He will be able to learn so much from practical way, so do not miss this chance.

          Let him choose

Instead of just handing your toddler a drink, ask what he would like to drink. Perhaps let him choose between two, like milk and apple juice. This way little one is forced to communicate by pointing or using a word to get what he wants.

         Slow down a little

If you are talking to your little one, be sure not to forget commenting, after comments make a little pause to give him a chance to respond before jumping in. When child realizes he has got your full attention, he has bound to engage with you using sounds, gestures and finally words.

          Silliness

You can easily get child’s attention and create an opportunity for him to communicate just by being a little silly or doing something unusual, unexpected. Try putting baby in a tub without water or leaving him his cereal bowl empty. He will have to communicate with you that something strange is going on and that something is wrong, whether through gestures, sounds or, hopefully, words. Then, have a conversation with your little one about what you need to do to make things right.
